I am interested in learning more about psychopathology and feel having knowledge and understanding about this subject is a useful ‘foundation’ for a therapist.
The relationship between mind and body is a key area of interest for me. I am a trained Fertile Body Method practitioner, and biological/hormonal influences on psychological distress (and vice versa) is an area I have studied. I have read books (for example: The Body Remembers, Babette Rotschild) which detail physical and psychological mechanisms of the stress response, affect regulation, physiological effects of psychological trauma etc.
I haven’t studied psychiatric diagnosis, or use of DSM, in any depth and so I’m looking forward to a better understanding in this aspect.

Hello,
I think of this course as a rather welcome introduction to psychopathology.
I must confess I feel a little overwhelmed by the complexity of this topic but also fascinated. In my view, a psychotherapist must be aware of the presence of any mental disorders, and able to recognize their patterns, and also know how to deal professionally with a case of mental disorder when it becomes apparent in therapy. The fact that is not for a psychotherapists to present a diagnosis does not mean that psychotherapists need do nothing or that we may just assume that the line between mental disorder and normality is simply too flexible for us to even consider the existence of boundaries. Even the act of referring a client on to a GP and psychiatrist can have a great impact on the client. This is why I hope that this Psychopathology module can really help me to make informed choices and choose the best possible way forward for a particular client who may be suffering from a mental disorder. I am also keen to explore in depth and grasp better how to use some important tools appropriately for the benefit of the client, such as the diagnostic interview and the DSM. This course could be a valuable opportunity to get into a position to do just that, in a structured way.
